Why is America Lagging Behind?

Share this:

Hi All,

I just came across this article, and thought I would put a question out there for some feedback. T-Mobile announced yesterday that they are going to be the first to offer a 3G USB stick modem for your laptop. This technology has been around for years and in 3G form for at least a year. Why is it only hitting the US market now? Why is the US so far behind in this release?

The 3G infrastructure might have been a good explanation, but the iPhone 3G was launched on June 12th, 2008, so what took so long? Help me out here with some explanations/feedback in the comments.

Thanks,

Aryeh

  1. Aryeh,

I think the reason is cellphone penetration and introduction of 3G in the US. Don’t have the exact numbers, but I think only 60% of US citizens has a cellphone, and its mostly used for making calls. Unlike Israel for instance, which has 104% cellphone penetration, and lots of premium services (mms, email, ringtones, wallpapers, mobile portals, etc).

    Dvir.

  2. Cool, thanks Dvir, I think that is probably the right explanation, although that does not explain the iPhone 3G’s huge success over there.

  3. @Dvir – I hear you but does this fall in the category of cell phone? I think the target market is prob companies and other business users who need if for there computers on the go in addition to their cellphones.
    Thanks for answering

  4. Hey guys. It’s simply a matter of T-Mobile being late to the 3G party. Most of the other carriers have been offering this sort of product for years, but T-Mobile, for some reason, has been slow in getting their 3G network up and running.

  5. @Eli Why didnt AT&T release a similar product? It might be they did market research a Americans don’t want it?
